You know those movies that you use to check out your phone, mails or make pauses to refill your drink or to go to the bathroom? Well, The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) is not that kind of movie.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe” follows father-son coroner team Tommy and Austin Tilden as they perform a late-night autopsy on an unidentified young woman found at a crime scene. What begins as a routine examination quickly spirals into a nightmarish ordeal as they uncover increasingly bizarre and inexplicable findings.

The main reason you will be glued to the screen during the first half of the movie is because of the three layers in which the movie is masterfully wrapped. The first layer is horror that is based on the few jump-scares along with the realistic depiction of gruesome corpses. The second is the mystery behind Jane Doe that you will try to uncover along with the mortician father and son. And the third is the genuine discomfort that the process of autopsy inflicts upon the ordinary (live) human.

A Promising Start, Familiar Finish

As the mystery about Jane Doe starts to unravel, after more than half of the movie has passed, the plot begins to enter the cliche category. The “Déjà vu” effect is very strong, and you will have the notion that all that is about to happen you have already seen quite a few times before. The final plot and ending are easy to predict, and that will bring you down from the heights to which the beginning of the movie pulled you. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the movie is not worth watching; on the contrary, but original plot twists are the magic ingredient that differentiate a good movie from a masterpiece.

Everybody has a secret. Some just hide them better than others.Tommy (Brian Cox)

Not every movie is ‘Angel Heart’ or ‘Psycho,’ nor is every book ‘Heart of Darkness’ or ‘Cloud Atlas’. ‘The Autopsy of Jane Doe’ is a good, suspenseful movie that you’ll maybe forget about in some time.
